About Spoleto: Cathedral and Ponte delle Torri

Spoleto in southern Umbria, with a Romanesque cathedral of 1198 decorated with a golden mosaic and frescoes by Filippo Lippi, and the Ponte delle Torri, a tall medieval bridge across a wooded gorge.

The cathedral was rebuilt after Frederick Barbarossa burned the city in 1155 and consecrated in 1198. Its front has a mosaic of 1207, and Filippo Lippi painted its apse from 1467. The Ponte delle Torri, about 230 metres long and 80 metres high, probably took its present form in the fourteenth century.

The cathedral is free; visits stop during services. The bridge is open to walkers by day when it is not closed for works; check before you go. The fortress museum has a ticket and is usually closed on Mondays. Escalators lead up from the car parks.

Did you know? High on the front of Spoleto Cathedral shines a golden mosaic of Christ, signed by an artist called Solsternus and dated 1207.
