About Spello

Spello, a small walled hill town of pale pink stone a few kilometres south of Assisi, with Roman gates, lanes full of flowers, frescoes by Pinturicchio and its famous carpets of petals at Corpus Domini.

Spello was the Roman colony of Hispellum, and two of its Roman gates still stand. In the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Pinturicchio painted the Baglioni Chapel around 1500. On the feast of Corpus Domini, people cover the streets with carpets of flower petals, a custom documented from 1831.

The town is free to walk; park outside the walls. The Baglioni Chapel has a small fee, and churches close during services. The flower carpets are made once a year, in late May or June, so check the date. The lanes are steep.

Did you know? In Pinturicchio's Annunciation in the Baglioni Chapel at Spello, painted around 1500, a small self-portrait of the artist hangs on the wall, with his name.
