About Rocca Maggiore

The Rocca Maggiore, the castle on the hill above Assisi, a fortress of pink stone first recorded in the twelfth century and rebuilt in the fourteenth, with wide views over the Umbrian plain.

A fortress stood here by 1173, when imperial troops held Assisi. The townspeople destroyed it in 1198, and it was rebuilt in the mid-fourteenth century for the papal legate Cardinal Albornoz. A polygonal tower was added in 1458. It reopened in 2023 after restoration.

The castle charges entry; the ticket office closes 45 minutes before closing, and hours are shorter in winter. Some parts are not step-free. Exhibitions may use some rooms. The climb from the town is short but steep.

Did you know? In 1198 the people of Assisi rose against the imperial governor and badly damaged the Rocca Maggiore; Francis was then a young man of about sixteen.
