About Basilica of St Clare
The Basilica of St Clare in Assisi, a Gothic church of pink and white stone built from 1257, with the tomb of Saint Clare and the crucifix that, by tradition, spoke to Francis.
The basilica was built from 1257 to 1265 for Clare, who founded the Poor Ladies, the women's order inspired by Francis. Her body lies in the crypt. The crucifix of San Damiano, a Romanesque painted cross of about the twelfth century, hangs in a side chapel.
Entry is free. The chapel of the crucifix is for silent prayer only. The crypt is reached by stairs. Dress modestly and expect photography to be restricted. The church closes at midday on weekdays.
Did you know? According to Franciscan tradition, St Francis heard Christ ask him to repair his church while praying before the San Damiano crucifix, which now hangs in the Basilica of St Clare.
