About St. Mauritius Church
Zermatt's parish church on the central Kirchplatz, consecrated in 1916, with gilded Baroque altars and a Noah's Ark ceiling; the nearby church bridge frames the classic Matterhorn view.
The Catholic parish church of St. Mauritius stands on the Kirchplatz in the centre of Zermatt, the heart of the old village. A church has been recorded here since 1285; the present building, designed by the architect Adolf Gaudy, was built in the 1910s and consecrated in 1916, replacing an older church on the site. Inside are gilded Baroque altars kept from the earlier church, and a nave ceiling painted with Noah's Ark, added in 1980 for the parish's 700th anniversary.
The church's garden holds the Mountaineers' Cemetery, and the glass pyramid of the Matterhorn Museum stands on the same square, so this quiet spot is the historic centre of Zermatt. Just below, the Kirchbrücke, the church bridge, crosses the Matter Vispa, and the view from it, looking south-west to the Matterhorn rising over the village, is one of the most photographed in Switzerland. The viewing area was widened in recent years to keep visitors safely off the road.
Did you know? A church has stood on this spot since at least 1285; the present building, by the architect Adolf Gaudy, was consecrated in 1916 and keeps the gilded Baroque altars of its predecessor.
