About Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The highest cable-car destination in Europe, on the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 metres, with a viewing platform over a sea of peaks and glaciers and an ice palace carved into the glacier.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the station on the Klein Matterhorn, a 3,883-metre peak about seven kilometres from the Matterhorn itself. It is the highest place in Europe that can be reached by cable car: a tunnel leads from the mountain station to the Breithorn Plateau, and a lift and stairs climb to a viewing platform at 3,883 metres, with a panorama over scores of Alpine peaks and glaciers across Switzerland, Italy and France. The original pendulum cable car opened in 1979; a modern 3S gondola was added in 2018.

At this height the air is thin and cold, around minus thirty-five degrees in deep winter and rarely above five degrees in summer, so take the ascent gently. Inside the mountain, a Glacier Palace is cut into the ice about fifteen metres below the surface, a chill world of tunnels and ice sculptures. The site is the heart of Zermatt's glacier ski area on the Theodul Glacier, and since 2023 a cable-car crossing links it with Italy in a single day.
