About The Greeting to the Sun
A twenty-two-metre circle of glass plates set flush in the waterfront, with solar cells beneath that soak up the sun by day and stage a glowing, colour-shifting light show across the paving after dark. Completed 2008.
The Greeting to the Sun, Pozdrav Suncu, is a circle twenty-two metres across set into the stone-paved waterfront beside the Sea Organ, at the western point of the peninsula. It is made of three hundred multi-layered glass plates, laid flush with the ground, with photovoltaic solar cells underneath. By day the cells gather sunlight and feed electricity into the city's grid; after dark, lights beneath the glass wake into a slow, shifting show of colour.
It was designed by Nikola Bašić, who also created the neighbouring Sea Organ, and completed in 2008. Smaller circles beside it represent the planets of the Solar System, and a chrome ring around the great disc is engraved with the saints and feast days of the peninsula's churches, together with astronomical data, so it doubles as a kind of calendar.
Did you know? The Greeting to the Sun is a circle twenty-two metres across, set into the waterfront and paved with three hundred glass plates over solar cells that convert sunlight into electricity for the city.
