About The Queen's Hamlet
A dozen artfully weathered cottages set around a pond, built brand-new for Marie-Antoinette, and, despite the caricature, a real working farm whose produce reached the royal table.
The Hameau de la Reine was built for Marie-Antoinette from 1783 and largely completed by 1785 to 1786, designed by her architect Richard Mique with input from the landscape painter Hubert Robert. A rustic model hamlet of about a dozen cottages grouped around an artificial lake, it drew on the picturesque style then fashionable and on Norman rural architecture, each building made to appear older and humbler than it was.
Contrary to the caricature of a queen playing peasant, the Hameau included a genuine working farm, run by an appointed farmer, with vineyards, fields, orchards and vegetable gardens whose produce supplied the royal table. Several cottages were reserved for the queen, among them the Queen's House, a boudoir, a warming room and a billiard house, alongside a decorative mill, while the dairy, dovecote and barn served real agricultural use.
