About Saint-Louis Cathedral
Two onion-domed towers and a soaring cupola mark the parish church that Napoleon's new diocese raised to cathedral status in 1802, generations after its first stone was laid.
Versailles Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Louis, was built between 1743 and 1754 to serve the new Saint-Louis quarter south of the palace. Its architect was Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, grandson of Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Laid out on a Latin-cross plan, it carries a dome over the crossing and two lateral towers crowned with bulbous Baroque cupolas, a late-Baroque design raised just as Neoclassicism was taking hold. Its grand organ, commissioned in 1759 from Louis-Alexandre Clicquot, was completed in 1761 by his son François-Henri.
The church became a cathedral only in 1802, when the Diocese of Versailles was created under the Concordat of 1801, making Saint-Louis the bishop's seat; it was solemnly consecrated in 1843. Damaged during the Revolution and restored across the nineteenth century, it is protected as a monument historique (Mérimée PA00087667).
Did you know? The cathedral was designed by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, grandson of Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the man behind the Hall of Mirrors, so the family that shaped the palace also shaped the town's church.
