About Juliet's Balcony (Casa di Giulietta)

The legendary 13th-century house with a famous bronze balcony that draws over a million Shakespeare pilgrims each year, complete with a bronze Juliet statue and walls covered in love notes.

Casa di Giulietta is a 13th-century house in central Verona whose Cappello family owners inspired Shakespeare's Capulets in Romeo and Juliet. Though no evidence exists that a real Juliet lived here, the city embraced the literary legend and transformed the courtyard into one of Italy's most-visited sites. The famous balcony was actually added in the 1930s, built from a medieval sarcophagus fragment. A bronze statue of Juliet, unveiled in 1972 by sculptor Nereo Costantini, stands in the courtyard, her right breast polished bright by millions of hands seeking luck in love. Every wall of the courtyard is covered in love notes in dozens of languages, left by visitors from across the world. The interior is furnished as a 14th-century Veronese home, with costumes from film adaptations including Zeffirelli's 1968 masterpiece.

Did you know? The famous balcony was added in the 1930s, built from a medieval sarcophagus fragment, and there was no balcony at all before that.
