About Ponte Scaligero
A dramatic 14th-century crenellated fortress bridge beside Castelvecchio, destroyed in WWII and painstakingly rebuilt stone by stone from photographs, one of Verona's most photogenic sights.
The Ponte Scaligero (also called Castelvecchio Bridge) is a fortified bridge spanning the Adige river, built between 1354 and 1376 as part of the Castelvecchio complex. Its three distinctive pointed arches, the central arch at 48.7 metres is one of the widest medieval arches in existence, support a crenellated walkway that functioned as both bridge and military corridor for the della Scala lords. Retreating German forces destroyed the bridge in 1945; the Veronese gathered fragments from the river bed and rebuilt it stone by stone using pre-war photographs as a guide, a major feat of historical reconstruction. The bridge offers magnificent views of the Adige and Verona's medieval skyline. At dusk, its warm limestone and brick glow golden, making it one of the most atmospheric and photographed spots in the city.
Did you know? The central arch of the Ponte Scaligero spans 48.7 metres, one of the widest medieval stone arches in Europe, a remarkable 14th-century engineering feat.
