About Valletta Waterfront (Pinto Wharf)

A restored row of Baroque harbour warehouses in Floriana, begun under Grand Master Vilhena and expanded by Pinto, now a cruise terminal and waterfront dining promenade on the Grand Harbour.

The Valletta Waterfront, also known as Pinto Wharf, is a row of restored Baroque warehouse stores along the Grand Harbour. Despite its name it lies in Floriana, just outside Valletta's landward walls. Development began in July 1727 under Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, who had a first store-house built; the main range of nineteen stores, with an attached church, was built under Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca and inaugurated in 1752. The limestone stores, of three floors, are traditionally attributed to the architect Andrea Belli.

Heavily damaged by aerial bombardment in the Second World War, the surviving facades were later rebuilt. After a major redevelopment the waterfront reopened in 2006 as a cruise-liner terminal and a dining and retail promenade. A Grade 1 national monument, it was placed on Malta's Antiquities List in 1925 and hosts events including the Malta Jazz Festival.

Did you know? Though nicknamed Pinto Wharf, the waterfront was not Pinto's alone: building began in 1727 under Grand Master Vilhena, and Pinto added the main range of nineteen stores, inaugurated in 1752.
