About Manoel Theatre
Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena built this jewel-box theatre in 1731: an oval of gilded boxes under a painted sky, among the oldest working theatres in Europe.
The Manoel Theatre was built in 1731 by Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, who financed it from his own funds, and it opened in 1732. Originally the Teatro Pubblico and later the Teatro Reale, it was eventually renamed after its founder. The design is generally attributed to Romano Carapecchia, with construction by Francesco Zerafa and Antonio Azzopardi. Its oval auditorium has three tiers of wooden boxes finished in gold leaf, a pale-blue trompe-l'oeil ceiling imitating a cupola, and seating for roughly 550.
A Latin inscription over the entrance reads "Ad honestam populi oblectationem", for the honest recreation of the people. Often described as among the oldest working theatres in Europe, and commonly cited as the third-oldest and the oldest in the Commonwealth, it fell out of theatrical use before being restored and reopened in December 1960. Further restoration followed in 2003-2006. It is now Malta's national theatre and a home venue of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, within Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know? It is often billed as Europe's oldest working theatre, but that title is not quite earned: it is usually ranked the third-oldest working theatre in Europe, and the oldest in the Commonwealth.
