About City Gate
Valletta's main gate, a deliberately modern 2011-2014 Renzo Piano breach in the old bastions, with his Parliament House and an open-air theatre in the bombed Opera House ruins.
The present City Gate, the main landward entrance to Valletta at the head of Republic Street, was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and built between 2011 and 2014. It takes the form of a wide breach in the bastions flanked by tall free-standing blocks of limestone, a deliberately open passage rather than an enclosed archway. It is at least the fifth gate on the site, succeeding gates of the 1560s, 1633, 1853 and 1964-65.
As part of the same commission, Piano designed a new Parliament House just inside the gate, built between 2011 and 2015, and an open-air theatre, the Pjazza Teatru Rjal, inserted into the ruins of the Royal Opera House and opened in 2013. That opera house, designed by Edward Middleton Barry, opened in 1866, was gutted by fire in 1873, and was destroyed by aerial bombing in 1942.
Did you know? Renzo Piano's gate of 2011-2014 is at least the fifth to stand here, following gates of the 1560s, 1633, the British Kingsgate of 1853, and a rationalist 1960s gate demolished in 2011.
