About Pantalica Necropolis

A UNESCO World Heritage site of over 5,000 Bronze Age rock-cut tombs carved into the walls of a dramatic canyon, the largest and most important prehistoric necropolis in Sicily, dating from 1270 to 650 BC.

Pantalica is one of the most extraordinary prehistoric sites in Europe: a steep-sided canyon carved by the Anapo and Calcinara rivers into the limestone plateau about 40 kilometres north-west of Syracuse, whose vertical walls are honeycombed with more than 5,000 rock-cut Bronze Age tombs. The necropolis was in use from approximately 1270 BC to 650 BC, serving the Bronze Age city of Hybla (whose prince's palace has been identified at the top of the plateau). The tombs are oval or roughly circular, carved into the cliff face, and range from simple single-chamber graves to multi-room family tombs. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2005) and is also a nature reserve of spectacular beauty, with the rivers below supporting a rich ecosystem. The canyon requires hiking to visit properly.

Did you know? The 5,000 tombs at Pantalica were used over a period of approximately 620 years, from 1270 BC to 650 BC. If the Bronze Age city above the canyon had an average population of 2,000 people and a life expectancy of 30 years, the necropolis would have received roughly 40 burials per year over its entire period of use.
