About Noto

A UNESCO World Heritage Baroque masterpiece built entirely from scratch after the 1693 earthquake, with streets of golden limestone palaces, the spectacular Cathedral, and the most photogenic Baroque townscape in Sicily.

Noto is approximately 30 kilometres south-west of Syracuse and represents one of the most extraordinary acts of urban planning in European history. When the earthquake of January 11, 1693 completely destroyed the original hilltop city of Noto Antica, the decision was made to rebuild the city entirely on a new site, on a lower and more stable plateau nearby. Over the following decades, the new Noto was built from scratch in a unified late Baroque style, using the local soft golden limestone (pietra di Noto), which gives every building in the city a warm honey-gold colour that intensifies in the afternoon light. The result is the most coherent Baroque urban environment in Sicily and arguably in all of Italy. The historic centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002 as part of the 'Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto' inscription.

Did you know? In May, Noto hosts the Infiorata festival, an annual tradition in which the entire Via Nicolaci is covered with elaborate pictures made from millions of flower petals, creating one of the most visually extraordinary street spectacles in Italy, lasting for three days.
