About Syracuse Cathedral
A Baroque cathedral built around an ancient Greek Temple of Athena from 480 BC, the original Greek columns are still visible inside the walls, making this one of the most extraordinary religious buildings in Europe.
The Cathedral of Syracuse is arguably the most layered building in all of Sicily: its Baroque facade conceals a Greek temple from 480 BC, which in turn was built on the site of an even older sanctuary. After the Syracusan victory over Carthage at the Battle of Himera in 480 BC, the tyrant Gelon commissioned a great Doric temple to Athena, whose columns, thirty-six originals, many still standing, were incorporated wholesale into the Christian cathedral that replaced it in Byzantine times. Inside, walking through the nave, visitors can see the ancient columns embedded in the walls every few metres, their stone worn smooth by twenty-five centuries of human touch. The Baroque facade by Andrea Palma was added after the 1693 earthquake and is considered a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque.
Did you know? The Temple of Athena that underlies the cathedral was built to celebrate Syracuse's victory over Carthage at the Battle of Himera in 480 BC, reportedly fought on the same day as the Battle of Salamis, meaning the Greeks defeated both Persia and Carthage on a single extraordinary day.
