About Fountain of Arethusa
A miraculous freshwater spring rising at the edge of the Ionian Sea, surrounded by papyrus plants and tied to the ancient Greek myth of the nymph Arethusa, one of the most enchanting natural phenomena in Sicily.
The Fountain of Arethusa is one of the most extraordinary natural features in Europe: a large freshwater spring that rises literally at the edge of the saltwater Ionian Sea on the southern tip of Ortigia. The pool is fringed with tall papyrus plants, among the only natural European populations of this African plant, and inhabited by ducks and grey mullet. Ancient Greeks considered the spring sacred, believing the Arcadian river god Alpheus pursued the nymph Arethusa beneath the sea from Greece to Sicily, where Artemis transformed her into this freshwater spring. The spring was used as a water supply in antiquity and was mentioned by Pindar, Virgil, and Cicero. Today it is a public garden beside the sea ramparts, one of the most romantic spots in all of Syracuse.
Did you know? The papyrus growing around the Fountain of Arethusa is one of only a handful of natural European populations of the Egyptian plant Cyperus papyrus, the same plant that ancient Egyptians used to make their famous writing material. It was probably brought to Sicily over 2,000 years ago.
