About Laurenskerk (St Laurence Church)
Rotterdam's only surviving medieval building, a magnificent 15th-century Gothic church that was gutted in the 1940 bombing, carefully rebuilt, and still dominates the city centre.
Laurenskerk, the Church of Saint Laurence, is the one medieval building that survived the devastating German bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940. The bombing destroyed virtually the entire historic city centre, but the Gothic church, though burned out and gutted, kept its structural walls standing. Built in the 15th century in Gothic brick style typical of the Dutch Late Gothic tradition, the church features a massive tower 65 metres tall and a vast nave. Inside, it contains remarkable carved wooden choir stalls, the great 1973 Marcussen organ, the largest organ in the Netherlands, bronze doors by Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù, and memorial windows. The church was painstakingly restored between 1952 and 1968 and is today an active Protestant church and major concert and cultural venue. Surrounded by the contemporary buildings of the rebuilt Rotterdam city centre, the Laurenskerk stands as the city's most powerful reminder of what existed before the war.
