About Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

A hilltop garden in western Porto with the finest panoramic views of Vila Nova de Gaia and the Douro river, home to peacocks, a Rose Garden, and the Super Bock Arena that replaced the original 1865 Crystal Palace.

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal occupy a hilltop in western Porto, offering some of the finest panoramic views over Vila Nova de Gaia, the Douro valley, and on clear days the Atlantic horizon. The gardens take their name from the Crystal Palace erected here in 1865 for the Porto International Exhibition, a great iron-and-glass structure inspired by London's Crystal Palace of 1851. The original Crystal Palace was demolished in 1951 and replaced by the present Super Bock Arena sports and events pavilion, which some critics consider a regrettable loss, though the gardens themselves have survived. The 8-hectare gardens include a formal Rose Garden, woodland walks, a pond, a library pavilion, sculptures, and a café. Peacocks wander freely through the grounds. The belvedere at the garden's edge offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Porto, looking directly across the Douro to the Port wine lodges and hillsides of Gaia.

Did you know? Porto's original Crystal Palace (1865) was destroyed in 1951 to make way for the Super Bock Arena, a demolition many Porto residents consider one of the greatest cultural losses in the city's 20th-century history.
