About Igreja do Carmo & Igreja dos Carmelitas
Two Baroque churches standing side by side with only a one-metre gap between them, popular legend says the narrow house was built to keep monks and nuns apart, though both were male Carmelite institutions, the Igreja do Carmo has a magnificent azulejo tile panel covering its entire north facade.
One of Porto's most unusual architectural curiosities, the Igreja do Carmo and the Igreja dos Carmelitas stand immediately adjacent to each other, separated by only one metre, a gap occupied by what is claimed to be one of the narrowest inhabited houses in the world. The Igreja dos Carmelitas, on the left, was built around 1619–1628 for the male Discalced Carmelite friars. The Igreja do Carmo, on the right, was built in 1768, also for the male Carmelite order. According to popular legend, the narrow dwelling inserted between the two church walls was built to keep nuns and monks from meeting, but both churches were male Carmelite institutions, and the likely real reason was simply to avoid the two buildings sharing a wall. The more decorative of the two is the Igreja do Carmo, whose north flank wall is covered in one of the most spectacular azulejo tile panels in Porto: a vast blue-and-white panel by Silvestre Silvestri (1912) depicting scenes of Carmelite history, including the founding of the order on Mount Carmel.
