About Via dell'Abbondanza: Main Street

Pompeii's main shopping and commercial street, with stepping stones for crossing, ruts from cart wheels, painted shop fronts, electoral graffiti, and the most complete surviving picture of a Roman street in daily use.

The Via dell'Abbondanza is the longest and most commercially important street in Pompeii, running from the Forum area in the west to the Amphitheatre in the east, a distance of about 600 metres. It was the main artery of the city's commercial life and shows the texture of Roman urban existence in extraordinary detail. The high kerbs along the sides of the street were designed to keep pedestrians out of the mud and traffic. Three large stepping stones cross the street at intervals, allowing pedestrians to cross without getting their feet wet while leaving room for cart wheels, the ruts worn into the paving stones by centuries of cart traffic are still visible. The street-front facades of the shops and houses that line the Via dell'Abbondanza are among the best preserved in Pompeii: painted electoral notices endorsing candidates for local office, commercial signs advertising shops, erotic images at the entrances to certain premises, decorative panels showing mythological scenes. Walking this street is the closest experience in archaeology to actually inhabiting an ancient Roman city.

Did you know? The stepping stones on Via dell'Abbondanza were calibrated with mathematical precision, the gaps between them are always exactly the right width for a Roman cart axle to pass through, showing that Roman urban planners thought about pedestrian and wheeled traffic simultaneously.
