The Pompeii Antiquarium, located near the entrance of the archaeological site, displays a selection of the most important portable finds from the excavations, objects that complement and enrich the experience of walking through the site itself. The collection includes examples of the extraordinary range of everyday objects that Vesuvius preserved: jewellery and personal ornaments recovered from victims; coins and commercial weights and measures; surgical instruments of surprising modernity; ceramics, glassware, and bronze vessels from domestic contexts; food items including carbonised loaves of bread, olive oil, and preserved fruit; writing equipment including wax tablets and styluses; and a range of objects related to Roman religious practice. Several plaster casts of victims are also displayed here. The Antiquarium gives the objects the focused attention they deserve, these are not exotic curiosities but the actual possessions of actual people who lived and worked in Pompeii until one August day in 79 AD.
