About The Forum
The political and civic heart of Pompeii, a grand open square surrounded by temples and civic buildings, with Vesuvius dominating the horizon through the temple columns.
The Forum was the beating heart of Pompeii, the city's main public space, where political, commercial, religious, and judicial life all converged. Its rectangular open space, measuring 142 by 38 metres, was surrounded on three sides by a colonnaded portico and overlooked by the Temple of Jupiter at the northern end. On market days it filled with vendors; on civic occasions it hosted ceremonies and public speeches. The basilica for legal proceedings stood on one side, the temple of Apollo on another. When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79 AD, the Forum was likely crowded with the day's activity. Today it is one of the most moving spaces in the archaeological world: the columns still stand, the paving stones still bear the wear of Roman feet, and Vesuvius, the cause of everything, is visible through the ruined columns exactly as it was on the last morning of the city's life. Plaster casts of several victims are displayed in the Forum colonnade.
Did you know? The Forum of Pompeii was closed to wheeled traffic, stone posts in the road blocked carts from entering, making it a pedestrian-only civic space, a concept not reinvented in Europe until the 20th century.
