About Temple of Jupiter

The dominant temple at the northern end of the Forum, dedicated to the Capitoline triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, with Vesuvius perfectly framed in the gap between the columns.

The Temple of Jupiter dominates the northern end of the Forum and was the most important religious building in Pompeii, dedicated to the Capitoline triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, the principal gods of Rome. Built originally in the 2nd century BC, it was rebuilt and expanded after the earthquake of 62 AD and was still under restoration when Vesuvius erupted. Its elevated position on a tall podium at the Forum's north end meant it could be seen from throughout the city, and the combination of the temple's raised columns with Vesuvius visible in the background is one of the most photographed views in archaeology. In the interior, three colossal cult statues once stood, fragments of the head and limbs of the enormous Jupiter statue were found during excavation and are now in the Naples museum. The temple's podium is still impressive and the views from its steps across the Forum are magnificent.

Did you know? The colossal cult statue of Jupiter inside the temple was estimated to be around 3.5 metres tall, fragments of the head and limbs were found during excavation and are now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
