The main beach of Polignano a Mare, the Cala Porto or Lama Monachile, is one of the most dramatic small beaches in Italy: a pebble and sand cove set between two limestone cliffs at the base of the old town, with the medieval buildings of the town visible on the cliff edges above. The beach is reached by a steep stairway cut into the cliff face, and the combination of the white buildings above, the limestone cliffs on either side, and the clear Adriatic water below creates a visual composition of extraordinary beauty. The beach is small, perhaps 100 metres of shoreline, and in summer it is packed with bathers, but the setting is extraordinary regardless of the crowds.

The bridge visible above the Cala Porto beach, the Ponte Borbonico, was built by the Bourbons in the 1830s across the valley (lama) that cuts through the limestone cliff, as part of the new road linking Bari to Lecce. It is often mistaken for a Roman bridge, though an earlier Roman crossing on the Via Traiana once stood near this spot.
