The city

About Polignano a Mare

Polignano a Mare is a little white town that seems to grow straight out of the cliffs, hanging over the Adriatic in the heel of Italy. Its old houses cluster at the very edge of the rock, their terraces jutting over the waves, so that from the sea the town looks as if it might tip in. Below, the luminous blue water has carved the soft stone into caves and coves along the shore.

People have lived on this cliff for thousands of years, since long before Rome. The great Roman road east, the Via Traiana, once ran through here, and a bridge still spans the town's deep rocky inlet, though the graceful arch you see was built much later. For centuries it was a quiet fishing town, walled against raiders from the sea; only lately has the world discovered what a spectacular perch it holds.

Today that drama is the whole point. You wander the narrow white lanes, turn a corner, and suddenly there is nothing before you but sea, sky, and a dizzying drop. Verses are painted on the steps, cafés cling to the cliff edge, and in one sea-cave a restaurant serves dinner inside the living rock. This is also the town that gave Italy one of its best-loved songs, and every summer divers hurl themselves from these cliffs into the sea.

A few things you should not miss. Down between the cliffs lies the little cove of Lama Monachile, a strip of pebbles on brilliant water, framed by that old bridge. On the seafront stands a statue of Polignano's most famous son, the singer who gave the world "Volare". And a short way off wait the whitewashed villages and cone-roofed trulli of the countryside.

Stay for the evening stroll, when the low sun turns the white houses gold and the sea goes from blue to violet to black. Swifts scream around the rooftops, the smell of coffee and gelato drifts through the lanes, and far below the waves work at the stone. Polignano is small, and almost impossibly pretty, a town built on the very edge of Italy.
