About Certosa di San Martino
A magnificent 17th-century Baroque Carthusian monastery perched on Vomero hill, housing the greatest museum of Neapolitan art and history and the world's finest collection of nativity scenes.
The Certosa di San Martino occupies a dramatic position on the Vomero hill above Naples, its white facades and church domes visible from the waterfront far below. Founded in 1325 under Robert of Anjou, the monastery was entirely rebuilt in the seventeenth century and transformed into one of the most spectacular examples of Neapolitan Baroque architecture. Artists including Cosimo Fanzago, José de Ribera, Giordano, and Stanzione all worked here, filling the church and chapels with a galaxy of paintings, sculptures, and inlaid marble floors of extraordinary opulence. Since Italian unification the monastery has operated as a museum, housing a vast collection of Neapolitan art, historical artefacts, decorative arts, and, most famous of all, an incomparable collection of presepe: the elaborate hand-crafted Nativity scenes for which Naples is world-famous. The terrace offers one of the finest panoramas in Italy, sweeping from Vesuvius to the islands of the Bay of Naples.
Did you know? Carthusian monks at San Martino lived in almost complete silence, each in a private cell and garden, and were only allowed to speak during specific communal prayers.
