About Castel dell'Ovo
The oldest surviving castle in Naples, built on a tiny island once occupied by the Roman villa of Lucullus, famous for its egg legend and magnificent harbour views.
Castel dell'Ovo, the Castle of the Egg, stands on the tiny island of Megaride, connected to the Naples waterfront by a narrow causeway. This rocky outcrop was settled by Greek colonists from Cumae before 700 BC, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in the Bay of Naples. The Roman statesman and gourmet Lucullus, famous for his extravagant banquets, built a spectacular villa here in the first century BC. The Norman kings later built a fortress on the ruins, and the castle has been repeatedly modified by every subsequent ruler. Its strange and romantic name derives from a medieval legend: the Roman poet Virgil, believed in the Middle Ages to be a powerful magician, allegedly hid a magic egg in the castle's foundations. As long as the egg remains unbroken, the castle and the city of Naples will stand. The battlements offer splendid views across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius and along the waterfront.
Did you know? According to legend, the Roman poet Virgil, believed in the Middle Ages to be a sorcerer, hid a magic egg in the castle foundations; if it breaks, Naples will fall.
