The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site (KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau), about 16 kilometres north-west of Munich, stands on the grounds of the first concentration camp established by the Nazi regime, opened on 22 March 1933, weeks after Hitler took power. Dachau became the model for the camps that followed and a training centre for the SS. More than 200,000 people from over 40 nations were imprisoned in the camp and its roughly 140 subcamps, and at least 41,500 died there. Dachau was a concentration camp rather than an extermination camp. It was liberated by United States forces on 29 April 1945. On the initiative of survivors, who had formed the Comité International de Dachau, the memorial site opened in 1965. Its International Monument, by the survivor and sculptor Nandor Glid, carries the words "Never Again" in five languages. The site is a place of documentation, remembrance and education.
