About Deutsches Museum
One of the world's largest science and technology museums, on an island in the Isar, a hands-on cathedral of machines, from a walk-through coal mine to indoor lightning, opened by its founder on his 70th birthday.
The Deutsches Museum, on an island in the Isar (the Museumsinsel), is one of the largest and oldest museums of science and technology in the world. It was founded in 1903 by the engineer Oskar von Miller, a pioneer of electric power, who wanted a museum where science and technology could be shown as working machines rather than static exhibits. The City of Munich gave the island as the site, and the great exhibition building opened on 7 May 1925, von Miller's 70th birthday. The collection numbers more than 125,000 objects across some 50 fields, of which about 25,000 are on display, from a walk-through reconstructed coal mine to aircraft, ships and early computers. About 80 percent of the buildings were damaged in a 1944 air raid; rebuilding began immediately after the war. Today it draws around 1.5 million visitors a year.
Did you know? Fewer than one object in five is on display at any time: the collection holds more than 125,000 items across some 50 fields, but only about 25,000 can be shown at once.
