About Vieux-Lyon
France's largest Renaissance old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with pink and yellow facades and 300 traboules, hidden covered passageways through its buildings.
Vieux-Lyon, the old town of Lyon on the west bank of the Saône river, is the largest ensemble of Renaissance architecture in France and one of the finest in Europe, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The district contains three distinct historic quarters: Saint-Jean (the oldest), Saint-Georges, and Saint-Paul, each with its own distinctive character. The streets are lined with remarkable Renaissance hôtels (mansions) from the 15th and 16th centuries, when Lyon was one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, enriched by its fairs and its silk trade connections with Italy. The facades are characteristically painted in warm pinks, yellows, and ochres, a visual palette that recalls northern Italy and reflects the strong Italian cultural influence on Lyon during the Renaissance. The district is famous for its traboules, covered passageways that cut through buildings from one street to another, connecting courtyards and stairwells. Lyon has over 300 registered traboules, 40 of which are open to the public. They were used by silk workers to transport fabric away from the rain, and later by Resistance fighters during the Nazi occupation.
Did you know? Lyon's traboule passageways were used by Resistance fighters during WWII to evade the Gestapo, Jean Moulin, the most celebrated French Resistance leader, operated from Lyon and relied on this network.
