About Musée des Confluences

A spectacular deconstructivist building at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône, housing an extraordinary science and anthropology museum exploring the origins and futures of humanity.

The Musée des Confluences, opened in 2014 at the tip of the Presqu'île where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet, is one of the most architecturally dramatic museums in Europe. The building was designed by the Vienna-based firm Coop Himmelb(l)au and is a masterpiece of deconstructivist architecture: a glass cloud floating above a crystalline base, with cantilevered forms, tilted planes, and triangulated structural elements that make the building look as if it is in the process of becoming or dissolving. The museum's collections span the natural sciences and anthropology: fossils and specimens from natural history; archaeological and ethnological collections from civilisations across the world; and permanent exhibitions addressing fundamental questions about the origins of the universe, the evolution of life, the nature of societies, and the futures facing humanity. The building itself, however, is as much the attraction as the contents: the interior spaces, great glass halls with extraordinary structural complexity, are among the most exciting museum interiors in France.

Did you know? The Musée des Confluences building took over a decade to construct due to its extraordinary engineering complexity, the cantilevered metallic cloud section overhangs the water at angles that required entirely new structural calculation methods.
