About Chemin de la Corniche
Known as "Europe's most beautiful balcony", a promenade along the ancient city walls with sweeping views over the Alzette valley, Grund, and the historic fortifications.
The Chemin de la Corniche is a promenade running along the top of the old city walls on the southern edge of Luxembourg's upper town (Ville Haute), offering what is widely considered the finest urban panoramic view in the Benelux countries. The path follows the line of the ancient fortifications above the Alzette river valley, looking down over the Grund neighbourhood, Luxembourg's picturesque lower town, with its 17th-century houses clustered along the river, and across to the opposite cliff walls with their remaining fortification towers. The promenade has been a celebrated feature of Luxembourg City since at least the 19th century; the description "most beautiful balcony in Europe" is attributed variously to Victor Hugo and other visiting writers who were struck by the dramatic contrast between the upper and lower city. The path connects the Bock promontory area with the Place de la Constitution and the Pétrusse valley.
Did you know? The "most beautiful balcony in Europe" designation for the Chemin de la Corniche is attributed to Victor Hugo, who visited Luxembourg in the 19th century and was struck by the view.
