About Villa Reale di Marlia
The Villa Reale di Marlia, a few kilometres north-east of Lucca, a grand villa bought in 1806 by Elisa Bonaparte, sister of Napoleon, set in a park of historic gardens and a green theatre of hedges.
Elisa Bonaparte, Princess of Lucca, bought the estate in 1806 and called it royal. She remodelled the villa and made part of the grounds into an English park. Older gardens include a green theatre of hedges from 1652 and a lemon garden; the Spanish garden dates from the 1920s.
The park and museum charge entry. The park is usually open daily from March to late October, and only at weekends in November; it closes for maintenance in winter. Check the dates. Dogs on a lead are allowed in the park.
