About Tower of London
A 1,000-year-old castle on the Thames that has served as a royal palace, prison, and home of the Crown Jewels.
Founded in 1066 by William the Conqueror, the Tower of London is one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. The massive White Tower at its heart was built to intimidate the newly conquered citizens of London, and nearly a millennium later it still commands attention on the north bank of the Thames.
Over the centuries the Tower has worn many hats: royal residence, armoury, treasury, menagerie, and, most infamously, prison and place of execution. Among its most famous prisoners were Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh, and the young Princes in the Tower.
Today, the Tower is perhaps best known as the home of the Crown Jewels. The dazzling collection includes the Imperial State Crown, set with 2,868 diamonds, and the Sovereign's Sceptre, which holds the 530-carat Great Star of Africa. The fortress is guarded by the Yeoman Warders, popularly known as Beefeaters, and the resident ravens, legend holds that if the ravens ever leave, the kingdom will fall.
Did you know? The Tower once housed a royal menagerie including lions, an elephant, and a polar bear that fished in the Thames on a long leash.
