About Westminster Abbey

The coronation church of English and British monarchs since 1066 and final resting place of kings, queens, poets, and scientists.

Westminster Abbey is the spiritual heart of the British nation. Every English and British monarch since William the Conqueror in 1066 has been crowned here, and the abbey has hosted 16 royal weddings. The present Gothic church was begun by Henry III in 1245, and its soaring nave at 31 metres is the tallest in England.

More than 3,300 people are interred or memorialised here, including 17 monarchs. Poets' Corner honours literary giants from Chaucer to Dickens, while the nave contains the tomb of the Unknown Warrior, the only grave that must never be walked upon.

Scientists too have their place: Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking are all here. The Chapter House contains some of the finest medieval tile floors in existence.

Did you know? Every English and British monarch since William the Conqueror in 1066 has been crowned at Westminster Abbey.
