About Basilica di Santa Croce
The most spectacular expression of Leccese baroque, a church facade covered from top to bottom in an extraordinary carved stone menagerie of angels, cherubs, monsters, and foliage.
The Basilica di Santa Croce is the masterpiece of Leccese baroque architecture and one of the most extraordinary church facades in Italy. Its construction spanned nearly 150 years, from 1549 to 1695, and involved a succession of architects, Gabriele Riccardi, Cesare Penna, Francesco Antonio Zimbalo, and Giuseppe Zimbalo, each adding their own contribution to an increasingly elaborate decorative programme. The lower half of the facade is Renaissance in character, with classical pilasters and arches; the upper half erupts into full baroque exuberance, with two tiers of columns supporting an extraordinary assemblage of carved stone figures, animals, mythological creatures, plants, and architectural ornament. The central rose window is surrounded by angels, griffins, and what appears to be a monstrous figure spitting foliage. The effect is overwhelming and delightful in equal measure.
Did you know? The Basilica di Santa Croce took 150 years to build (1549-1695), spanning the transition from Renaissance to full Baroque, so the lower and upper halves of the facade were designed in entirely different artistic periods by different architects.
