About Roman Theatre of Lecce
A remarkably well-preserved Roman theatre of the 1st century BC to 2nd century AD, discovered by accident beneath Lecce's old town during construction works in the 1920s.
The Roman Theatre of Lecce was discovered by accident in 1929 during construction work in the historic centre, when workmen struck the ancient stone of the cavea. Since then, systematic excavations have revealed a first-century BC to second-century AD theatre in remarkable condition. The theatre had a diameter of 60 metres and could seat approximately 5,000 spectators in its semicircular cavea. Three tiers of seating, part of the orchestra and stage area, and substantial sections of the proscaenium are still visible. The theatre was built in the characteristic pale local limestone and is flanked on one side by the foundations of medieval houses built directly over the ancient structure. A small museum adjacent to the site contains artefacts discovered during the excavations, including marble architectural fragments, mosaic floor sections, and carved stone reliefs.
