About Castlerigg Stone Circle
A roughly 5,000-year-old Neolithic stone circle on a plateau near Keswick, ringed by high fells, one of the earliest in Britain and set in perhaps the finest landscape of any prehistoric site.
Castlerigg Stone Circle, on a plateau just east of Keswick, is a Neolithic stone circle generally dated to about 3200 BC and considered one of the earliest in Britain. About 38 stones form a slightly flattened circle some 30 metres across, with an unusual rectangular setting of about ten further stones built against its eastern side. It stands in a spectacular ring of fells, including Blencathra, Helvellyn and Skiddaw.
The circle is owned by the National Trust and in the guardianship of English Heritage, and was among the first monuments in Britain given statutory protection, scheduled in 1883; its only recorded excavation was in 1882. Its purpose is unknown, and the astronomical alignments proposed for it remain speculative. It is free to visit and open at all times.
Did you know? Castlerigg is around 5,000 years old, one of the earliest stone circles in Britain, and was among the very first monuments in the country given legal protection, scheduled back in 1883.
