About Ballenberg Open-Air Museum
A vast open-air museum near Lake Brienz where more than a hundred historic farmhouses and rural buildings from across Switzerland have been rebuilt, with farm animals, gardens and traditional crafts.
Ballenberg is the Swiss open-air museum of rural life, spread across a wooded site of some sixty-six hectares near Brienz, at the eastern end of Lake Brienz. Since it opened in 1978 it has gathered more than a hundred original historic buildings, farmhouses, barns, workshops and mills, from every region of the country, each dismantled at its original site and faithfully rebuilt here, grouped by the part of Switzerland it came from. The oldest is a house from Schwyz dated 1336.
The rooms are furnished to their period, and the museum is far from a static display: around two hundred farm animals of old Swiss breeds graze the fields, gardens and crops are tended in the traditional way, and more than thirty crafts are demonstrated, from basket-making and forging to weaving, carving and cheesemaking. It is a day out into the vanished rural Switzerland of past centuries, and it is open seasonally, roughly from April to early November.
