About Hamburg Rathaus
Hamburg's magnificent Neo-Renaissance Town Hall, completed in 1897, with 647 rooms, a gilded Apollo fountain in its courtyard, and the civic heart of the city.
Hamburg's Rathaus is one of the most impressive town halls in Germany, a vast Neo-Renaissance palace completed in 1897 after eleven years of construction. It replaced an earlier building destroyed in the catastrophic Great Fire of 1842. The building's green copper roof, dominated by its 112-metre central tower, frames the Rathausmarkt, Hamburg's main civic square. Inside, 647 rooms are decorated with paintings, tapestries, and sculpted reliefs celebrating Hamburg's history as a proud free city and trading republic. The gilded fountain of Hygieia in the inner courtyard, often called the Apollo Fountain, was installed after the 1892 cholera epidemic, symbolising health and renewal. Hamburg's Parliament and Senate still meet here. Unlike many German town halls, the Hamburg Rathaus is used for active governance, not just ceremonial purposes. Guided tours in multiple languages explore the state rooms and remarkable history of the building.
Did you know? The Hamburg Rathaus has 647 rooms, more than many royal palaces, all actively used for government, not merely on display.
