About Landungsbrücken

Hamburg's historic floating harbour landing stages on the Elbe, the gateway for harbour tours, river ferries, and the legendary port of one of Europe's great maritime cities.

The Landungsbrücken, literally 'landing bridges', are Hamburg's famous floating pontoon piers on the south bank of the Elbe, stretching for some 700 metres and consisting of 10 individually numbered pontoons. Built at the beginning of the 20th century to handle the enormous passenger traffic of an era when Hamburg was Europe's second-largest port of emigration after Liverpool, they became the embarkation point for millions of emigrants sailing to America. Today the Landungsbrücken serve as the city's main hub for harbour tours, the HADAG ferry service connecting Hamburg's Elbe-side communities, and excursions to the neighbouring ports and islands. The twin tower building housing the ticket offices and the boat operator offices was completed in 1909, and the distinctive green copper towers are themselves a Hamburg landmark. Nearby, the historic Type IXC submarine U-434 is moored as a museum vessel.
