About HafenCity
Europe's largest inner-city urban development project, 157 hectares of former port land transformed into a vibrant new mixed-use district anchored by the Elbphilharmonie.
HafenCity is one of the most ambitious urban development projects in European history, transforming 157 hectares of former port land along the north bank of the Elbe into a new, mixed-use urban district directly adjacent to Hamburg's historic centre. Begun in the late 1990s, the project is planned for completion around 2030 and will eventually house around 14,000 residents and 45,000 workers. The district is built at an elevated level, about three metres above the old quayside, to provide flood protection without traditional dykes, a forward-thinking engineering solution. Architecture is varied and largely contemporary, ranging from the spectacular Elbphilharmonie to striking residential and commercial buildings. The district features Hamburg's flagship contemporary maritime museum, the International Maritime Museum, housed in the historic Kaispeicher B. Public squares, waterside promenades, museums, restaurants, and cultural venues make HafenCity a genuine new neighbourhood with its own distinct identity.
