About St Nicholas' Church
A stunning 13th-century Scheldt Gothic church, the third tower in Ghent's iconic three-tower skyline and the spiritual home of the city's traders.
St Nicholas' Church is one of the finest examples of Scheldt Gothic architecture in Belgium, built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries using the characteristic grey-blue limestone quarried along the Scheldt river. The church was the parish church of Ghent's wealthy merchants, St Nicholas being the patron saint of traders, and its construction was largely financed by the prosperous cloth guilds.
The church forms the third point of Ghent's celebrated 'three tower' view, visible from St Michael's Bridge: cathedral, belfry, and St Nicholas' Church aligned in a breathtaking medieval panorama. The interior was heavily whitewashed during the Calvinist period (1578–1584) when all religious imagery was destroyed, but subsequent centuries have seen gradual restoration. Today the church still houses remarkable baroque altarpieces, rich furnishings, and a carved wooden pulpit. Its soaring nave and the quality of the stonework make it one of the most beautiful medieval interiors in Belgium.
Did you know? During the Calvinist iconoclasm of 1578, the church was used as a corn store and horse stable after all religious art was destroyed.
