About MSK – Museum of Fine Arts
Ghent's premier fine art museum, housing Flemish masters, Hieronymus Bosch, and studies by Jan van Eyck in a grand 19th-century building facing SMAK in Citadelpark.
The MSK, Museum voor Schone Kunsten, is Ghent's principal museum of historical fine art, founded in 1798 and housed since 1902 in a neoclassical building in Citadelpark. The collection spans seven centuries of painting and sculpture, from the medieval period through to the early twentieth century, with particular strengths in Flemish primitive painting, Dutch and Flemish Golden Age masters, and Belgian art.
Highlights include works by Hieronymus Bosch, whose fantastical allegories of sin and salvation are among the most studied paintings in Western art history; Jan van Eyck preparatory studies; Rubens paintings and sketches; and works by Van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, and the Belgian Symbolists. The building itself is a distinguished example of late nineteenth-century museum architecture, with a grand central rotunda and well-lit galleries. Together with SMAK across the path, the MSK provides a complete survey of art history from medieval Flanders to the present day.
Did you know? Many of MSK's founding artworks were seized from monasteries and churches closed by French Revolutionary authorities in 1798.
