About St Michael's Bridge
Ghent's most celebrated viewpoint, offering the iconic panorama of the three towers, Cathedral, Belfry, and St Nicholas' Church, reflected in the River Leie.
St Michael's Bridge, Sint-Michielsbrug, is Ghent's most famous vantage point, and with very good reason. Standing at the centre of the bridge, looking upstream, you are presented with the most celebrated view in the entire city: the three great medieval towers of Ghent, St Bavo's Cathedral, the Belfry, and St Nicholas' Church, rising above the guild houses of the Graslei in a panorama that has been painted, engraved, and photographed for centuries.
The current bridge was built in 1913, replacing an older bridge on the site. It was designed in a Neo-Gothic style to harmonise with the medieval surroundings, with carved stone detailing and eight bronze statues representing virtues. The bridge crosses the junction of the Leie and the former inner harbour, making it a strategic meeting point between the city's historic waterways. Both at dawn and at dusk, with the towers reflected in the still water, the view from St Michael's Bridge is as close to perfection as any urban landscape in Europe.
Did you know? The three-tower view from St Michael's Bridge has been painted and engraved since the 15th century, one of Europe's most enduring urban panoramas.
