The Vlaamse Opera, Flemish Opera, in Ghent is one of the most beautiful neoclassical opera houses in Belgium, its elegant Ionic portico facing the Schouwburgstraat since its opening in 1840. Designed by Louis Roelandt, the building was conceived in the tradition of the great European opera houses of the early nineteenth century, and its interior, with its horseshoe-shaped auditorium, gilded boxes, ornate ceiling, and superb acoustics, is considered one of the finest theatre interiors in the Low Countries.
The house is home to Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the Flemish opera and ballet company that performs across both Ghent and Antwerp. The programming is ambitious and cosmopolitan, encompassing grand opera, chamber opera, contemporary works, and dance.
