About Parco di Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini

A magnificent 19th-century Romantic park at Pegli, 15km west of Genoa, designed as an elaborate theatrical landscape with grottos, fake Gothic ruins, Egyptian temples, lakeside temples, and winding paths through dense vegetation.

The Parco di Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini at Pegli is one of the most elaborate and theatrical Romantic gardens in Italy, a 19th-century designed landscape of extraordinary inventiveness, created for the Marchese Ignazio Alessandro Pallavicini between 1840 and 1846 by stage designer Michele Canzio. The park is organised as a theatrical journey through an elaborate sequence of architectural follies, natural and artificial landscapes, and symbolic spaces: a Gothic chapel, a pseudo-Egyptian temple, a ruined arch, grottos with coloured lighting, a Swiss chalet, a Chinese pavilion, a lake with a nymphaeum, and dozens of sculptures and architectural features distributed through steep woodland paths. The park covers 9 hectares on the hillside above the town of Pegli, which is easily reached by train from Genoa Brignole. It is one of the most undervisited great gardens in Liguria and one of the most enjoyable half-day excursions from Genoa.

Did you know? Michele Canzio, who designed the park, was the principal stage designer of the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house in Genoa, and the park shows his theatrical background in every detail. The grottos were equipped with coloured oil lights in the 1840s, creating underground rooms in green, red, and blue light that were considered extraordinary by visitors of the era. The park was essentially a theatre for walking through.
