About Columbus's Birthplace

The traditional birthplace of Christopher Columbus in the heart of Genoa, a small medieval house near Porta Soprana, where history and legend meet in the alleyways where the world's greatest explorer grew up.

The house traditionally identified as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus stands at the foot of Porta Soprana, one of the finest surviving medieval gates of Genoa, in the Piazza Dante area of the city. Columbus, Cristoforo Colombo in Italian, was born in Genoa in 1451, the son of a wool weaver named Domenico Colombo. The exact house in which he was born has never been definitively established, and Columbus's birthplace has been disputed by several Italian cities, Savona and Calvi in Corsica among them, as well as Spain and Portugal. The current candidate, a small, partially reconstructed medieval building, is presented with appropriate historical caution as the "traditional" birthplace rather than a confirmed fact. A small museum inside the house traces Columbus's life, his four voyages to the Americas, and his significance for Genoa and for world history. The adjacent Porta Soprana gate (built 1155) is the finest surviving monument of medieval Genoa, its two towers rising impressively from the surrounding fabric of the caruggi.

Did you know? Columbus's precise nationality has been disputed for centuries, five Italian cities, Spain, and Portugal have all claimed him. The best current evidence strongly supports Genoa as his birthplace, but the debate continues among historians.
